Cannabis Essential Oil Healing – CBD, THC and What are Cannabinoids?

What are Cannabinoids and CBD in Cannabis?

Ref curtesy of CBDFarm.org

CBD Fact and Fiction

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over 100 identified cannabinoids (a special class of chemical compounds) in the cannabis plant. CBD and THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, are the two primary compounds that have been investigated in medical research.

For decades, most of this research, as well as public opinion, had been focused on the effects of THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis that causes a high. More recently, however, numerous scientific discoveries and breakthroughs have been made about CBD’s significant medical potential.

CBD Mania

Of all of CBD’s possible applications, the one garnering the most attention is the dramatic effect it has on young patients suffering from severe forms of epilepsy.  The story of Charlotte Figi, a young girl who went from 300 seizures a week to just a few with daily doses of a CBD tincture, has turned CBD into a media sensation and industry buzzword.

Because CBD does not produce a high, it does not carry the stigma associated with THC.  Hence, the public has been quick to embrace it and lawmakers in many states have begun to respond to growing demand for access to CBD, though not necessarily in ways that are supportive of cannabis legalization or that recognize the totality of medical cannabis research.

This CBD-only bias is reflected by an overestimation of its role in cannabis therapeutics, as demonstrated by a prevalence of the following misconceptions.

Myth: CBD is what people seeking cannabis as a medical treatment option need.

As Dr. Suzanne Sisley tried to explain to legislators in Kentucky and Minnesota, “…a CBD-only law would benefit a narrow segment of the patient population. The vast majority of patients need access to a broader spectrum of whole plant marijuana remedies. Even pediatric patients need more options.”

CBD can be life changing for certain patients suffering from specific conditions such as seizure disorders, but for the vast majority of patients who benefit from medical cannabis, THC is still the compound that provides results, especially for serious pain relief and as sleep aid.

Myth: CBD is the main cancer-fighting compound in cannabis.

Although the body of research for CBD’s specific effects on cancer is extensive and growing, most of what is known about the potential of cannabis in combating cancer comes from many years of examining THC’s direct effect on halting tumor growth and its effectiveness in cancer symptom management.

On the other hand, the greatest benefit is gained when THC and CBD work together synergistically – complementing and boosting each compound’s positive effects while mitigating negative effects.  This synergy elevates the overall effectiveness of the cannabis remedy.

Myth: CBD is not psychoactive.

Constance Finley, founder and CEO of Constance Pure Botanical Extracts, has a unique perspective on this point, informed by her background as a clinical psychologist.  Although much of the literature says that CBD is not psychoactive, Constance does not believe that statement is strictly accurate.  CBD may not cause a high or anxiety in novice users, but anything that affects one’s psychological condition is, by definition, psychoactive.  And CBD has a psychological effect, subtle though it may be, when it takes away anxiety and helps people feel focused.

What the Research Says

According to Project CBD, a non-profit educational service that promotes and publicizes scientific research related to CBD [see blog], studies have shown CBD to have the following notable therapeutic benefits:

In addition, there is evidence that CBD may act as a neuroprotectant – that is, able to stem neurological damage following strokes and in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s – and may play a role in neurogenesis, the creation of new brain cells.

Numerous studies have shown CBD’s promise in the treatment of a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:

While the list of clinical applications for CBD continues to grow, it should be noted that most of these applications are not in isolation of THC, whose role as a phytotherapeutic compound has already been established vis-à-vis many of the same conditions. CBD acts on different pathways than THC in the body, complementing THC’s effects on the same symptoms when administered together.  In addition, CBD counters the psychoactivity of THC, making it ideal for patients who cannot handle too much THC and who respond sufficiently to CBD for their medical condition.IMG_2541

What Are Flower & Plant Essences

My yellow roses produce heart-shaped petals since I began Essences of Life
My yellow roses produce heart-shaped petals

What are flower essences?

Flower essences are a bio-energetic imprint of a flower that has been transferred and stabilized in water.  Flower essences work on the non-material parts of ourselves and are used for emotional, mental and spiritual concerns. Flower essences as a primary treatment for what Traditional Chinese Medicine calls Shen or Spirit.  TCM views Shen or Spirit as containing aspects of emotional and mental health.

Each flower is profoundly intelligent and holds specific transformational information found in nature that can help us realize our true nature and help us shift out of self-limiting, self-destructive patterns and behaviors. Since flower essences are energetic in nature their benefits are not due to a bio-chemical interaction with the body but instead they work on the various energy pathways and fields such as the acupuncture meridians to create body, mind and spirit health and well being.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils from plants, herbs, flowers and trees are the very “Essence” of their power or ability to communicate and physically heal the body, mind and spirit.  The chemical analysis of essential oils is an ongoing science, with most of the research done in Europe as essential oils and Aromatherapy is embraced as a common Medical Practice with distribution of these healing oils via practicing doctors, hospitals and medical clinics.   Over centuries, our history in all cultures reveals the use of essential oils in medicines from the Dark Ages up to today’s modern version of extractions and is the basis for many current medical products.  Valarian Root for instance is used to create “Valium” which in the pill form is both additive and can be harmful.  This root taken in a tea or extraction, can provide the same result of “calming” without the side effects and potential harm as it is being used in it’s “natural form”.
The very best essential oils are distilled in a CO2 (cold water) high pressure process which extracts the oils from the plant material into a highly concentrated and highly healing form which can be used in Aromatherapy products and delivered via carriage oils to apply to the skin and body, both topically and internally.  Any use of essential oils should be used with medical or professional guidance to prevent irritation and result in a successful treatment.  Essential oils are powerful healers but need to be taken with knowledge and understanding of their abilities so they can work as an ally in fighting disease in the body, mind and spirit.  Until recently, there has been little study of Cannabis essential oil use in the US of medical purposes.  With the debate now opening doors with the medical community and changing the laws for use to begin a real active dialog regarding the plants uses and prescribed medical treatment, we will now begin to see the research and results of treatment use.   Essential oils from Cannabis Sativa and Indica flowers and plants are only now being considered in the USA but independent companies.   I have knowledge of two who are currently developing and producing a high-grade, CBD and THC Cannabis essential oil that is being used strictly in cancer treatment with US Doctors and clinics, under their guidance and distribution only.  This will change as more is known about the uses of this important medical essential oil and as specific strains are developed for specific needs.  It is predicted by studies currently on record in the medical field of both breast cancer and in treatment of seizures in Children that Cannabis will be used for a multitude of diseases, illnesses and problems in the body and could become the wonder plant of our century.    All thanks to Mother Nature and her flower and plant healing.

My Cannabis Sativa Essential Oil

My Cannabis Sativa is grown organically under strict guidance and laws in Switzerland, high in the Alps for the most pristine air and water quality standards in the world.   The strains are low in THC and high in CBD to provide a legal product that can be imported into the US.   The distillation is an established CO2 extraction (much like perfumers) produced in France in small batches for quality control and is tested for strength.    No chemical processing, Non-GMO and totally 100 % Organic and pure.  Until recently, there has been no distillation of Cannabis in the US due to the laws prohibiting the growing and production of this product.  With the changes in certain State laws, allowing the medical use of Cannabis, this is changing with several companies in California now customizing the “Extraction” of medical cannabis with specific chemical strengths and composition for specialty products such as mine.  It is important to note that both CBD and THC constituents must be present to interact and react with our own bodies receptors to use the compounds in symbiosis to “heal” us.   To learn more about “Healing with Cannabis” please refer to www.cannabiscure.info  which has lots of good medical information and references that support all medical conditions and current treatment with Cannabis.

USING ESSENTIAL OILS AND AROMATHERAPY TO HEAL

The Use of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy Healing Effects on the Body

The Absorption and Effects of Essential Oils
Glandular

Essential oils probably exert their most powerful and direct pharmacological effects systemically via the blood supply to the brain. They also have an indirect effect via the olfactory nerve pathways into the brain. Essential oil fragrances are absorbed through blood circulation and nerve pathways from the sinuses into the central glands of the brain, which control emotional, neurological, and immunological functions.

Skin

Essential oils are absorbed in minute quantities through the skin, depending on the oil, dilution, and application (carrier oil, compress, etc). Many of the indications for specific oils include various skin conditions.

Respiratory

Essential oils are inhaled during treatment, which have a direct effect on the sinuses, throat, and lungs. Many essential oils are specific medicines for respiratory conditions.

Circulation

Many essential oils have beneficial effects on circulatory problems, both through dermal and respiratory absorption. These oils enhance the circulation stimulating effects of massage.

The Seven Best Ways of Using Essential Oils
for Health and Healing  (reference from www.floracopia.com)
1) Inhalations-This is the use of essential oils on hot compress, in diffusers, or in hot water for inhalation. Standard dose is 10 drops. Best for respiratory and sinus, headaches. Caution: prolonged inhalation of concentrated essential oils can cause headaches, vertigo, dizziness, nausea, and lethargy.

2) Baths-The best way to use essential oils in the bath is to mix them first with salts or an emulsifier such as milk or sesame oil. Aromatic bath salts disperse the oils safely into the water, and milk and sesame oil emulsify the essential oil so that it disperses. Without salts or an emulsifier, drops of essential oils will float on the water and then get directly on the skin. Combined with the heat of the water, this can cause dermotoxicity, especially if the oils are of a heating nature. Oils that should be avoided in the bath include spicy oils such as cinnamon oil, oregano oil, thyme oil, and tulsi; phototoxic oils such as citruses, especially bergamot oil; and those with specific irritant potential such as lemongrass oil. The oils that are generally considered mild and safe for bath are lavender oil, clary sage oil, rose oil, geranium oil, frankincense oil, sandalwood oil, eucalyptus oil, and conifers such as cedar oil, fir oil, pine oil, pinon pine essential oil, spruce oil, and juniper oil to name a few. A generally safe dose is 5 – 10 drops, mixed with 1/2 to 1 cup of salt or emulsifier. Aromatic baths are excellent for skin problems, circulatory problems, respiratory symptoms, stress and nervous tension, insomnia, muscular and menstrual pains. Caution: overuse of essential oils in the bath can cause irritation. Use only mild, non-irritating oils for bath, such as lavender oil and clary sage oil.

3) Compresses-10 drops oil in 4 oz hot water, soak cloth, wrap.

Good for bruises, wounds, muscular aches and pains, dysmenorrhea, skin problems.

4) Facial steam-1 – 5 drops on hot water in a pot, cover head with a towel, steam face. Excellent for opening sinuses, headaches, skin treatment.

5) Massage-Pure essential oils are about 70 times more concentrated than the whole plant. Dilutions are typically 2% – 10%. For adults, a 2.5% dilution is recommended for most purposes. For children under 12, 1% is generally safe. A 2.5% blend for a 1 ounce bottle of carrier oil is 15 drops of essential oil.

1% blend = 6 drops per oz

2% blend = 12 drops per oz

3% blend = 18 drops per oz

5% blend = 30 drops per oz

10% blend = 60 drops per oz

6) Direct Palm Inhalation

Caution: This method of use should only be done with oils that can be safely applied to the skin (see the toxicology and safety section below). Apply 1-2 drops of oil to the palms, rub together gently and inhale deeply. This is an excellent method of use for a quick and easy exposure to the anti-microbial and other therapeutic uses of essential oils.

7) Diffusers-There are various types of diffusers on the market, with different advantages and disadvantages.

Candle diffusers

Usually a heat resistant vessel for water and essential oils, and a heat resistant platform that holds the vessel over a small candle.

Advantages: very simple to use; provides light background fragrancing

Disadvantages: does not produce strong concentration for therapeutic benefits.

Electric heat diffusers

Small absorbent pads are placed inside of a heating chamber with ventilation that allows the aromatic compounds to evaporate into the surrounding air.

Advantages: easy to use; minimal maintenance; can diffuse thicker oils.

Disadvantages: heat damages some aromatic compounds.

Cool air nebulizing diffusers

A system that uses air pressure generated by a compressing unit to vaporize the essential oils. A glass nebulizing bulb serves as a condenser, allowing only the finest particles of the essential oil to escape into the air.

Advantages: strong diffusion maximizes therapeutic benefits in respiratory conditions.

Disadvantages: diffusers need to be cleaned regularly. More viscous oils cannot be diffused (such as sandalwood oil or ylang ylang oil).

Timers Electric heat and cool air nebulizers can be purchased with timers, to produce intermittent diffusion. This reduces the amount of oil consumed, and prevents over-saturation in a room.

The Safe Use of Essential Oils (Warnings and Precautions)

The Safe Use of Essential Oils (linked to Floracopia’s website for reference)
In general, when used properly essential oils are quite safe and highly beneficial. However, because their uses are still being researched beyond their established purposes and uses over time and in societies around the globe, much is still unknown.  Due to the lack of knowledge by the general populations and heresay but society, people can and do hurt themselves by using these highly concentrated botanical substances improperly.

Toxicology and Safety

Do not use essential oils internally.  ALL MY PRODUCTS ARE TOPICAL AND ARE NOT EDIBLE

Do not apply directly to skin; always dilute with carrier oil.  ALL MY PRODUCTS ARE DILUTED WITH OILS AND CARRIER OIL, BUTTERS OR WATER/PURE GRAIN ALCHOL

Keep out of reach of children.   ALL MY PRODUCTS ARE SAFE ENOUGH FOR CHILDREN’S — USE BUT BECA– USE OF THE HIGH “THERAPEUTIC GRADE” OF THE ESSENTIAL OILS, I ONLY RECOMMEND SMALL AMOUNT TO TEST THE SKIN FIRST TO THEIR SENSITIVITY AND IF THERE IS NO REACTION IN 10 MINS, IT SHOULD BE SAFE BUT “LESS IS MORE” REMEMBER

Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.   CLOSE EYES WHEN USING THE CANNABLISS SPRAY PLEASE

Do not use citrus oils before exposure to UV light.  MY PRODUCTS DO HAVE CITRUS SO DO NOT — USE BEFORE OR DURING SUNBATHING OR A DAY IN THE SUN PLEASE, THESE ARE FOR HEALING NOT TANNING

Use only pure essential oils; avoid synthetic fragrances.  ALL MY PRODUCTS ARE HIGH-GRADE, NON-GMO, ORGANIC AND PURE ESSENTIAL OILS FROM PLANTS AND FLOWERS AND NO ADDITIVES, CHEMICALS OR ANY PROCESSING – ALL HAND MADE, INDIVIDUALLY.

Do not use essential oils on infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly, or those with serious health problems, without advanced medical study.

Avoid prolonged exposure without ventilation.

Store essential oils and carrier oils properly to avoid degradation and rancidity.   COOL AND DARK PLACE IN THE MEDICINE CABINET OR BATHROOM CUPBOARD.  NOT WARM.

Do not use essential oils internally:

There are two exceptions to this rule.

The first is properly administered dosages of essential oil medications prescribed by a licensed physician. This is now occurring in certain European clinics, but is rarely available in the US. People should avoid using essential oils internally if prescribed by a lay practitioner, especially if the practitioner’s education is primarily from the marketing perspective rather than clinical.

The second exception is biocompatible levels of essential oil ingestion when taken as part of the diet. A good example of this is oregano oil. Oregano oil is widely marketed for internal consumption, with numerous claims made about its therapeutic efficacy. In actual practice, the internal consumption of this oil frequently causes the typical symptoms associated with the ingestion of essential oils, such as extreme gastric hyperacidity. On the other hand, the use of oregano as a fresh herb, steamed at the end of food preparation, provides all the benefits of oregano oil at a biocompatible level, with none of the gastric dangers.

Should accidental ingestion of any significant amount of an essential oil occur, immediately call your local Poison Control Center. Do not induce vomiting. Do not give water if breathing or swallowing is difficult.

Essential oils are very concentrated. Dilute all essential oils before applying to the skin, either in a fatty oil, or in water as when used on a compress.   ALL MY PRODUCTS ARE DILUTED

Phototoxicity: Some essential oils can strongly increase sensitivity to sunlight when applied to the skin. This is especially dangerous when applied undiluted to the skin, but even low concentrations in a carrier oil can cause problems if followed by exposure to sun or tanning lamps.

Phototoxicity will be much stronger directly after application of the oil, and will gradually decrease over an eight to twelve hour period; if higher than normal concentrations are used it can be longer. Most of the phototoxic oils are also photocarcinogenic. The most common oils which cause phototoxicity are the citruses; bergamot oil is the most reactive. Some citruses are phototoxic if expressed, but not if distilled, such as lemon oil and lime oil. Other oils include marigold oil (tagetes), verbena, and angelica oil.

The best practice is to use proper dilutions, avoid direct exposure to UV rays after application, and avoid the use of citrus oils if exposure will be occurring after treatment.

Awakening the Natural Healing of Plants & Flowers

I have been interested in healing plants and flowers since I was a child in the woods of upstate New York.   Left on my own, the woods were teaching me of the wonders and secrets of the plants, trees and mosses that I made my home in the spring, summer and fall each year.  The knowledge of the old ways of healing with nature, plants and flowers began at age 15 and arrived with the discovery of ancient wisdoms from native American remedies and books of elixirs and herbal recipes.  Many were handed down from mother to daughter in almost every culture and language.  The University library shelves held worn & torn books of herbal recipes from early tribal cultures, the Maori, the Aboriginals, the Hawaiians, the Tahitians and the early Indian and Asian cultures all embraced natural medicines utilizing roots, teas, tinctures and many of the same plants with variations of species dependent on local environment and terrain.  All of these teachings are accessible in our historic references, which were studied by early healers, many of them doctors of science, and many more were women.  Women were the gatherers and were the healers of their tribes and knew of natures secrets of the forest and it’s plants.
Before the dark ages, ignorance, religion and politics descended upon women healers in our society and  stopped natural healing from taking its due course of utilizing the power of nature for medicines.  Inherently, women knew all plants, herbs, trees, flowers and even dirt & clays were used in one form or another in salves, balms, teas, tinctures, poultices and elixirs to heal humanities ills.   (Earth in the form of clays are used by Indian Aryvedic healers even today in powerful healing of bodily disease and is now recognized globally as a medical treatment).

Women were the gatherers of nature’s plant medicines and who have carried on these traditional ways of healing with plants, flowers and natural herbs with many of their uses still used today to create current medicines.   This is evidenced by the power of flower essences back to the 16th Century and French parfumeries who knew the value of these scents and essences.  French Aristocracy placed great value on fine essences and several Kings of England were known to have possessed their own private “Aromatherapy collection of flower and plant essences” that kept them safe during the Black Plague epidemic therefore,  recognizing the healing abilities of flowers and plants throughout human history.

In the 30’s English Homeopath, Edward Bach studied and created hydrosoles from flower dews and eventually to the current distillation process used today to create extractions from plant and flower materials for the current “aware & educated” society of healing methods and practices.  Our past history with plants & flowers are very much relevant to Aromatherapy and the reawakening or resurrence that is occurring today to embrace these natural practices of healing.

Plants, herbs, trees and flowers have existed on this planet for over 380 million years and have adapted slowly to become their current species with intentional abilities and an inherent “intelligence” to communicate and heal us.  We are all organically connected to the Earth and to these live plant and flower species.  In rediscovering this connection with Mother Nature’s medicine, we have realized that our bodies have developed genetic ‘receptors’ that can process and interact with plant elements, as is obviously part of the natural plan of Mother Earth.  We just need to listen.
